Last year, Stoltze designed a brand-new website and companion lookbook for the Watkins College of Art in Nashville. Now, that hard work has paid off with meaningful accolades for both.
CASE, the Council for the Advancement of Secondary Education, selected the Watkins website redesign for its highest honor, a Circle of Excellence Gold Award-one of just 100 gold winners from over 3,000 creative submissions (3.1 percent!) by higher education institutions!
Additionally, Communication Arts honored the Watkins lookbook with inclusion in this year's 59th Design Annual. Nearly 4,000 creative projects were submitted to the competition; Stoltze's work for Watkins is among the 131 projects chosen (3.3 percent!) as winners.

Stoltze is delighted to share our eighth catalog collaboration with the Davis Museum at Wellesley College. Eddie Martinez: Antz at a Picknic is an oversized volume that showcases the seven monumental paintings and 17 sculptures currently on view in the museum’s rotating galleries. To reflect the scale, technique, and materiality of the work, we included each painting in its entirety, followed by two full-bleed, close-cropped details. These images capture spray-painted lines, impasto smears, pushpins — even baby wipes affixed to the canvases. To further express detail, tactility and scale shift, we wrapped the black-on-black foil-stamped cover with a folded poster of the exhibition’s eponymous painting. For the headlines, we used a typeface that was appropriately loose and off-kilter. And it certainly didn’t hurt that it was named “Big Ed.”

Stoltze Design is excited to share the news that we received the 2017 MITX Award for “Best Website Design.” The winning entry is a healthcare exchange launched in 2016 as a one-stop shop for access to health and wellness benefits for businesses and their employees. (Contractually, we are not allowed to post the site)
The website was a collaborative effort, created in partnership with Black Pepper for digital strategy, and pod consulting for web development. Collectively, our work included visual identity, messaging, UX and best web practices to create an original website with a fresh look and tone that still fits within the corporate brand.

Stoltze has been keeping busy this summer assisting the Davis Museum at Wellesley College with the momentous reinstallation of their permanent collection. We've designed branding, banners, wall graphics, wayfinding systems, wall papers, and labels to frame more than 620 works of art, spanning three floors and eleven galleries. After nearly three years in the making, the galleries will reopen to the public tonight, and will more than double the number of works of art on view at the Davis.

Sometimes the screen is no substitute for the beauty and tactile experience of a well-crafted printed publication. At Stoltze Design, the print tradition is still alive and well, as evidenced by these exciting magazine projects with some of our favorite clients.
Most recently, we redesigned MIT's Spectrum to align with the identity for MIT's freshly launched $5 billion campaign. While still oversized, the redesign features a more manageable format, artful photography brilliantly printed on uncoated 100% recycled paper, and more visual points of entry, which bring a new energy and forward-looking feel to the entire magazine.

We are happy to report that the catalogue for Bunny Harvey: Four Decades won First Place in the category of Exhibition Catalogues in the New England Museum Association Publication Award Competition. Kudos to Stoltze design director Katherine Hughes for her inspired work on this piece and to Puritan Capital for the exquisite printing. We are particularly proud of our partnership with the Davis Museum, and very pleased to have that work recognized.

We’re proud to be part of the Fort Point Arts Community since founding Stoltze Design in 1984, the same year Clif did a poster for the 7th Annual Fort Point Open Studios. We tackled it again this year for the 39th! Thanks to local artist Christine Vaillancourt for letting us use her beautiful imagery.

Last night, Clif helped organize a sold-out AIGA talk by infographic designer Nicholas Felton at the Institute of Contemporary Art. Author of the beautifully designed and highly collectable Personal Annual Reports that contain a myriad of graphics, maps, and statistics reflecting his activities over the year, Nicholas was also a member of the product design team at Facebook credited for influencing the design of Facebook's timeline. The presentation was smart, inspiring and very entertaining.

Fort Point is a vibrant, eclectic section of Boston just across the channel from South Station. It's also been the backdrop for Stoltze Design's endeavors for the last 30 years!
Once home to a booming shipping industry, the neighborhood's brick warehouse buildings evolved into loft spaces for artists and other small business, but the area remained largely undeveloped until the completion of the Big Dig. Now, with the Boston Convention Center and ICA in close proximity, Fort Point is being developed with hotels, restaurants and innovation-driven businesses.

For The Williston Northampton School, we developed a new brand, admissions suite and website. And last but not least, we created a unique admissions piece for The Putney School that combines three different components, a viewbook, student profiles and a course catalog.

The Summer 2014 issue looks at books. How and why do we read? What are we poring over, and where are we doing it?
Through essays on libraries and evolving technology, book reviews and curricula, we showcase stunning art, including dramatic book structures by Stephen Doyle, Daniel Eatock's interpretive book shelf, and typographer Russell Maret's meticulous artists' books.

This fall, Clif served as the Koopman Distinguished Chair in Hartford Art School's visual communication design department. A semester of teaching will culminate in an exhibition and lecture celebrating 30 years of Stoltze work.
The show, Double Feature, will include Stoltze projects from the past three decades, and also showcase the designs of the Spring Koopman Chair, Bonnie Siegler and her New York design studio Eight and a Half. For our part, we've curated a selection of music packaging, posters, websites, book jackets, and a wall of our favorite logos. The space is also steeped in the Stoltze aesthetic, with distinctive wall colors, furniture, artifacts, and custom woodwork made from reclaimed materials by Jeff Smith, the talented artist and friend who built out our studio space.

We're proud to present the latest issue of ArchitectureBoston, "Coast," which tackles the timely question all waterfront cities are now facing: How do we cope with the inevitable reality of climate change and sea-level rise? The issue is a thoughtful exploration of challenges, ideas, and solutions. The content lent itself to some beautiful landscape and underwater photography, and we are delighted to have Providence-based photographer Jesse Burke featured on the cover.
The issue will be highlighted at ArchitectureBoston Expo next week. One of the largest events for the design and construction industry in the country and the largest regional conference and tradeshow in New England, ABX takes place November 19–21 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.
The conference program offers nearly 175 workshops and tours, and this year features an ArchitectureBoston track. Delve into topics from the 2013 issues of ArchitectureBoston magazine: What Would Gropius Do? Trends in Design for the Aging, Who's Afraid of MOOCs? and Facing the Rising Tide. The "Next" issue of ArchitectureBoston explores developing trends in fabrication, materials, economics, and demographics, and asks how architecture can respond to these changing conditions.
As with every issue, Stoltze Design helped define the visuals and concepts to convey this theme, including the use of ZXX as our guest display typeface. Designed by recent RISD grad (and former NSA contractor) Sang Mun, ZXX is an unscannable typeface that comes in six variations and is intended to raise awareness of online privacy issues. The typeface unifies the articles with its futuristic tone, and adds new dimension to a rich array of images from the past, present, and predicted future.

Stoltze Design recently helped a new non-profit organization, Satellite Affordable Housing Associates (SAHA), with the design of their identity and website. Fueled by a commitment to high-quality and responsible design, SAHA provides affordable homes and services that empower people and strengthen neighborhoods.
SAHA is based in the San Francisco Bay Area—however, through the miracle of modern technology, excellent project management, and the help of Stoltze's West-Coast-based designer Lauren Vajda, we were able to deliver a product that was fresh, modern, user-friendly, and, most importantly, reflective of SAHA's mission and values.

Stoltze Design was in the house at the 2013 AIGA BoNE (Best of New England) Show, where we fetched a bone for our festive "Drinko de Mayo" poster, designed by senior designer Katherine Hughes and laser-cut by danger!awesome in Cambridge. On Tuesday night, Stoltze Design attended the launch party of the latest issue of ArchitectureBoston, entitled American Gropius, celebrating the life and legacy of Walter Gropius. The issue (which coincided with Grope's 130th birthday) was feted at the Gropius House in Lincoln, MA, where local architects, designers, and even former members of The Architects Collaborative (the firm co-founded by Gropius) mingled, laughed, and reminisced. The evening was a huge success, with delicious food and great company, topped off by private tours of the famous house.

Don't miss this presentation on Thursday, April 25 at 6:30 pm at the ICA by Vancouver-based designer, typographer, writer, and illustrator Marian Bantjes.
Renowned for her intricate patterning and delicate ornamentation, Stefan Sagmeister calls Bantjes “one of the most innovative typographers working today.” She worked for ten years as a typesetter before opening her own design firm, which she shuttered in 2003 to pursue projects described as “highly personal, obsessive, and sometimes just plain weird.”

We recently had the exciting opportunity to help Monotype, a 125-year-old typographic legend, revitalize and redefine their global brand. Working closely with the Monotype marketing team—vice president of corporate marketing Lisa Landa and design director Dennis Dimos—and Jason Rubin from Libretto, we developed a new brand identity around the new logo and typeface Kootenay, created by Monotype type director Steve Matteson.

On the occasion of their 35th anniversary, the New Art Center came to Stoltze Design for help branding their annual ARTS BALL fundraiser. The theme for the evening, "Stayin' Alive!", inspired a festive identity that referenced the '70s while still maintaining a contemporary look and feel. As one of our designers said, "It's a discotype!"
The sold-out event was a huge success, exceeding their ambitious fundraising goal by 25%! Clif and his wife Carol joined in the festivities as the New Art Center was transformed into discotheque, with partygoers sporting polyester prints, bell bottoms, aviator sunglasses, huge wigs, and, of course, lots of bling. Stoltze Design recently designed the cover and interior of a new book from Houghton Mifflin: 100 Yards of Glory, documenting the greatest moments in NFL history. Written by Joe Garner and Bob Costas, with a foreword by Joe Montana, this book is a must-have for every diehard football fan. As excited as we were about the project, imagine our dismay when we realized that the selected cover image was a crucial moment from Super Bowl XLII, in which the Giants just barely beat the Patriots 17 to 14, destroying a perfect season. We weren't the only ones disturbed with this image selection, as evidenced by Bob Costas's recent appearance on Conan. Sometimes being a designer really hurts!
Here's hoping we succeed in reversing the curse at Sunday's rematch. Go Pats!!

Last Thursday evening, Stoltze Design was honored to be a guest of the Boston Society of Architects at their 2011 Design Awards Gala at the Copley Marriott. We were also delighted to see the logo we designed for the event prominently displayed throughout the evening!
Congratulations to all the winners, and thanks to the BSA for a wonderful evening.

This month Stoltze Design welcomes the work of artist Mike Ware into our studio. The son of a sign painter and the grandson of a Boston Globe typesetter, Mike inherited a love of typography and graduated from the Art Institute of Boston. In his personal work of assemblage and mixed-media projects, he continues to embrace type, surface, and spatial relationships. Primarily using found and recycled materials, he invites the viewer to discover the beauty in the abandoned.
Please join us for some wine and hors d'oeuvres while celebrating the opening of Mike's exhibit at our studio!

We are pretty excited about our redesign of ArchitectureBoston magazine. Although we've been making gradual refinements to the existing design over the last few years, the redesign was fully realized in the current Fall 2011 issue, Science. Our goal was to re-energize the layout to reflect the caliber of the content, while still maintaining a well-respected brand. To do this, we introduced a flexible grid that allows for more dynamic white space and larger imagery. The magazine also underwent a thorough refining of details, from the logo and title treatments, down to the folios.

We've been working with the ICA and AIGA Boston to bring one of our design heroes, Vaughan Oliver, back to Boston next Wednesday, April 27, scheduled to coincide with ICA's "The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl." He will be discussing his illustrious career as the designer who created the 4AD Records brand with his work for Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Pixies and Throwing Muses, among many others. We first had Vaughan lecture in 1989 (with Frank Black in attendance) and then again in 1996 on the heels of his "This Rimy River" exhibit in LA.

Architect and Design Research founder Ben Thompson (1918–2002) is one of those professionals whose influence is felt far beyond their field. Anyone who has strolled through Faneuil Hall (designed by Thompson’s firm), bought a Marimekko textile (first imported by Thompson), or enjoyed a Sunday brunch at Harvest (originally co-owned by Thompson and his wife, Jane) has been affected by this local legend.
